Amazon CEO meets Modi, high on India plans

modi-amazonJeffrey P. Bezos, the chief executive of e-commerce giant Amazon, is betting big on the India story and finds India “unbelievably energising” and the next big destination for e-tailer’s ambitious growth plans.

The Amazon chief, who is visiting India, called on India’s Prime Minister Narendra Modi in New Delhi Oct 3 and discussed his company’s expansion plans in Asia’s third largest economy.

Amazon has already pledged $2 billion investment in India and is looking cash in on the multi-billion opportunity by setting up a data centre in the country. “We are always evaluating new locations. We have AWS. We started it long time ago and it has grown into a very large business, separate from our consumer business… we are building new data centres and are looking where we should put them and evaluating these in India as well,” Bezos said.

India has emerged as one of Amazon’s fastest growing markets – the company is close to touching $1 billion in gross sales.

Bezos is amazed at the exponential growth of the Internet penetration in India, which has whetted the company’s appetite for its India plans. “I find India super energising. I get here and people are very energetic and energising. They are inventive and entrepreneurial. It is fun and exciting.”

The world’s largest online retailer plans to sell packaged food and beverages in India from mid-October.
