Following Chinese veto of India’s bid to designate Jaish-e-Mohammed (JeM) chief Masood Azhar as a terrorist at the United Nations, India has decided to grant the World Uyghur Conference (WUC) members permission to meet the Tibetan spiritual leader Dalai Lama. A team from Washington based WUC is expected to visit Dharmasala from April 28-May 1 to meet Dalai Lama, according to unnamed WUC members.
The visas have been issued to WUC members to travel India. Its vice-president Omer Kanat and president of Uyghur American Association Ilshat Hassan are among the delegation. The relations between WUC and China’s government has been strained with China accusing WUC of supporting secessionist and terrorist movement in the Xinjiang province of China. The WUC, however, denies these allegations and says that its protest is against the human rights violation in the region of China bordering Central Asia and Pakistan.
China has also accused the WUC of maintaining links with the Tibetan movement and its spiritual leaders. India has taken up the issue of China’s veto on the Masood Azhar at the level of Defence Minister, Foreign Minister and National Security Advisor bilateral talks. India has expressed its displeasure at China’s decision on the issue.
