MH 17: Bodies and “black box” released, EU threatens sanction on Russia

In a sign of relief for the grieving families and international investigators of the ill-fated MH 17, a train with the remains of victims has arrived in the city of Kharkhiv, outside rebel territory.

Following growing international pressure, pro-Russian rebels who are accused of shooting down the passenger flight, had earlier transferred the “black box” flight recorders to Malaysian officials on July 21.

The Malaysian Airlines crashed on July 17, killing all 298 people on board.

These reports come amidst growing international pressure on Russia as a number of European Union members, and the US have threatened sanctions against business and people close to Russian President Vladimir Putin.

British Prime Minister David Cameron stressed, “We must do what is necessary to stand up to Russia.”

Britain is expected to push for tough sanctions against Russia at European Union foreign ministers meet in Brussels on July 23.

Some experts believe that these efforts will be resisted by a number of countries that have close ties with Russia or fear repercussion on economic growth. France, Italy and Germany are expected to take a more balanced approach.

Also on July 21, the UN Security Council approved – with Russian support – a resolution calling for an international investigation into the crash. However Moscow has warned that the west should not try to advance its “vested interests” by using this horrific incident as an excuse.
