India names first envoy to ASEAN

asean-brunei5Marking an upswing in India’s relations with Southeast Asia, India has named Mr Suresh K. Reddy as the country’s first ambassador to the separate Indian Mission to ASEAN and East Asia Summit in Jakarta.

The decision to appoint a separate envoy to ASEAN and East Asia Summit was among key outcomes of the twin regional summits in Brunei in October last year.

India’s multi-layered ties with this economically vibrant region is growing steadily, with bilateral trade estimated to be $76 billion. India and the 10-nation ASEAN has set a target of scaling up bilateral trade to $100 billion by 2015 and double that volume by 2022.

India and the East Asia region, including the ASEAN, are looking to complement this burgeoning economic relationship with greater strategic depth, which seeks to address a host of shared security challenges, including the scourge of trans-national terrorism, piracy and cyber security.

The setting up of an Indian mission focused on the East Asia region and the appointment of an Indian envoy, whose sole brief will be to promote bilateral ties, are set to infuse greater depth and content in this multi-faceted relationship.
